When the moon moves into the conical shaped shadow of the earth, it goes from being illuminated by the sun to being dark.

The moon will be totally eclipsed for an estimated 1 hour and 43 minutes in the prime viewing region, according to NASA predictions.

The fullest eclipse, at 2022 GMT, will be visible from Europe, Russia, Africa, the Middle East, much of Asia and Australia.

This month's lunar eclipse was not a "super moon", but what made this particular eclipse so historic was its unique alignment with the Earth, piercing the exact centre of the Earth's shadow. Fun fact: Legend has it that Christopher Columbus, tipped off by an astrologist, told an indigenous Caribbean tribe that the Christian god would soon make the moon disappear because they would not share resources with Columbus's crew.

During totality the moon will be completely in the Earth's shadow.

Millions of Americans watched the first solar eclipse visible from the USA since 1979 last August.

Blood Moon: Longest eclipse of 21st Century will be visible in Kilkenny tomorrow

The celestial event comes as a result of the alignment between the moon, Earth and the sun, and will be visible across the United Kingdom and parts of the Eastern hemisphere.

But the good news is we will get a great look at Mars, as the planet will be the closest it's been to Earth since 2003.

Unlike a solar eclipse, which can be viewed only from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth.

The full eclipse will begin at approximately 9:13 p.m. UTC, which is just 5:13 p.m. EST, making it impossible to see from anywhere in the United States, Canada, Central America, or Greenland. The eclipse is estimated to start in India at 11:44pm IST on Friday night and the total lunar eclipse 2018 is expected to begin at 1am IST.

Not all the lunar eclipses will lead to a "bloody" show.

The probability of a simultaneous blood moon and total lunar eclipse is very low, reports say.

What is a Blood Moon?

It will be the longest-lasting eclipse this century. This happens thanks to the earth's atmosphere and the effects its red and orange wavelengths have.
