That was until UFC president Dana White revealed the mega-surprise of the afternoon: Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title booked as the main event for UFC 229 on October 6 in Las Vegas.

UFC president Dana White made the announcement during a news conference Friday (Aug. 3), revealing that McGregor-Nurmagomedov would headline UFC 229 at Vegas' T-Mobile Arena.

Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) superstar Conor McGregor is all set to return to the Octagon after almost a two-year hiatus from Mixed Martial Arts.

McGregor took time off to face Floyd Mayweather Jr in the boxing ring in a blockbuster fight in August 2017, where he was knocked out in the 10th round.

McGregor and his entourage stormed the Barclays Center loading dock and the Irishman threw a dolly through the bus window in search of Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov had won the lightweight title UFC 223 in April.

"And obviously for Conor, coming back from a two-year layoff, in my opinion - and it's insane to say this because of how popular he is around the world - but he's one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC".

China warns against blackmail as Donald Trump considers higher tariffs
U.S. threats have escalated since, with the President saying he is ready to impose tariffs on all $500bn of Chinese imports. Now Trump administration officials are reportedly considering increasing those tariffs to 25 percent.

That led to charges for McGregor, who escaped a jail term and criminal record after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct, paving the way for the bout against Nurmagomedov. They're bad mouthing me, saying I turned down fights.

The accompanying video sets up the fight in stunning circumstances as the biggest name in the sport takes on an undefeated world champion in what is already being described as one of the biggest fights in the history of the cage.

At 26-0, Russia's Nurmagomedov has been untouchable as a pro, and his recent wins over Michael Johnson, Edson Barboza and Al Iaquinta have only strengthened his place as one of the greatest lightweights ever.

Dustin Poirier, who Diaz is scheduled to fight at UFC 230 on November 3 at Madison Square Garden, jokingly chimed in with a similar tweet, writing, "I ain't fighting on that show either F the ufc".

Once McGregor resolved to return to the octagon earlier this year, Nurmagomedov was the obvious choice to be his next opponent - but the biggest obstacle to this bout appeared to be money.

Oddly, Diaz later tweeted that he actually won't be fighting as part of the card.
