Russia Appoints Actor Steven Seagal As Special Envoy To U.S.

Russian President Vladimir Putin shakes hands with US actor Steven Seagal after presenting a Russian passport to him during a meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow on November 25, 2016.

In 2015, BuzzFeed News reported that two years earlier, Putin had suggested to then-President Barack Obama that he could make Seagal the honorary Russian consul to California and Arizona.

He has previously hung out with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a fellow martial arts fan.

The announcement comes with Russia-U.S. ties at a low ebb, over long-standing conflicts in Syria and Ukraine and allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which Moscow rejects.

"Everywhere you look in Russian Federation - the terms of Steven Seagal", wrote the editor of the Bureau of si-EN-EN in Moscow Nathan Hodge.

But many experts say those are neither irrevocable nor serious steps that could show the country is honest about denuclearization. Australia, Belgium, France and the Philippines have yet to recover some of their war dead from North Korea.

I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been appointed as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of Russian and American Humanitarian ties. Former co-stars have often talked about the actor's violent temper on the set of his movies, which doesn't really bode well for negotiating peace between two countries.

As for Russian and United States relations now, things are a bit contentious, to say the least.

According to the press release, Seagal will also asked to influence matters "in the sphere of culture, public and youth exchanges" between both nations. He had this to say. "I take this honour very seriously".

It's not the first time Russian Federation has tried to give Seagal some sort of semi-official status.

"I think this way Russian Federation demonstrates its willingness to do its best so that negative changes in the relations never become irreversible", he said.
